Pediatric Urgent Care

A Message From Our Medical Director, Dr Paul Thomas

Pediatric Urgent Care opened Nov 1st. 2009 to meet two huge needs in the Portland metro area. We had no pediatric ONLY urgent care so that doctors and parents could elect to have children see a Pediatrician when their doctor’s office was closed and they were experiencing an emergency or urgent condition. We were also in the middle of the H1N1 flu pandemic with tents being erected at emergency rooms in town and a safe, friendly place needed for those sickest children in town who needed a level of care just below that of hospital/trauma emergency rooms.

I returned from Zimbabwe this August having visited the rural areas where I grew up and witnessing 80% unemployment, poverty and complete lack of opportunity and basic health care for many. Mutare, near the village of my youth, is a sister city to Portland. The HIV rate in Zimbabwe is one of the highest in the world, leaving orphans too numerous to count. The dream was born to form a foundation to assist with the health needs and other basic needs of these orphans in Zimbabwe. To jump- start this dream, 10% of profits from Pediatric Urgent Care will be the seed money for this dream.

Every child needs a primary care physician/ medical home and Pediatric Urgent Care hours were selected specifically to complement and not compete with the hours of most doctor’s offices. An electronic medical record of each visit will be faxed to the primary care physician within 24 hours and follow-up directed to the child’s regular physician. Those patients who do not have a primary care physician will be directed to a local physician/clinic partnering with us.
