  Our Doctors

Dr. Paul Thomas, MD FAAP ABIHM
Dr. Thomas founded Pediatric Urgent Care in 2009. He opened and worked at the Pediatric Afterhours Clinic at Emanuel Children’s hospital from 1988 to 1993 and has worked as a busy pediatrician in the Portland area the past 20 years. Dr. Thomas saw the need for an urgent care dedicated to children only. So often family and adult urgent cares and emergency rooms are frequented by adults seeking drugs and that environment can be frightening for children. With the H1N1 flu reaching epidemic proportions, the need was never greater for a pediatrician-staffed, child-friendly office-setting pediatric urgent care.

Dr Thomas graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1985. He completed his pediatric residency at UCSF – Fresno and UCSD – San Diego California between 1985 – 1988. He is board certified in Pediatrics and Alternative and Complementary Medicine. He loves children and has 9 of his own (six adopted).

Dr. Rich Martin, D.O., MPH, FAAP
Dr. Martin is a dedicated advocate for children--in the exam room, locally, and nationwide. He has long considered Pediatrics an ideal way to advocate for children on many levels. During his decade-long career in Pediatrics, he’s made several visits to State and Federal government officials, has brought together several groups of people who care for children on issues of public and environmental health, and currently serves on the Hood River County Commission on Children and Families. His commitment to your children means providing state-of-the-art care in Pediatrics, and appropriately medicating your children only when necessary. Dr. Martin wants you to understand your child’s condition, and appreciates your trust as a partner in your child’s care.

He feels fortunate to share his love for children with his wife and 1-year-old son, along with the many nieces and nephews in his loving family.

Dr. Rebecca Stepaniak, MD, IBCLC
Dr. Stepaniak graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1999 and then attended and completed her residency at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 1999 and 2002. Dr. Stepaniak has worked in a variety of environments including primary care, in-patient hospital care and pediatric emergency. She and her family moved to Portland in 2005 seeking a lifestyle better suited to their values. Prior to urgent care, she maintained a practice at The Vancouver Clinic, leaving in 2009 for the birth & care of her third son.

Dr. Stepaniak believes in holistic and wellness care for patients and their families. She feels strongly that complimentary and alternative medicine can intersect with traditional allopathic medicine and provide optimum benefits for patients.

Dr. Stepaniak's passion & area of specialty is Breastfeeding Medicine. She is a certified IBCLC and active member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. Additionally, she is a board member and chair of the medical advisory committee for the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank.

Lee J Herskowitz, DO, MBA, FAAP
Dr. Herskowitz received his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, did a rotating internship at JFK Hospital in Stratford, NJ and his Pediatric Residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. After being involved in faculty group practice and serving as faculty mentor to residents for 16 years in Modesto, California, he took leave to finish an MBA at University of California and do administrative medicine with several health plans in the NW. Missing hands-on health-care, he returned to practice in a Community Health Clinic as a full time Pediatrician and Medical Director.

His interest is and always has been to influence the practice of medicine to respond to patients needs, eliminate unnecessary costs and procedures, educate patients on their health issues and promote a partnership for medical care between providers and their patients. When not busy at work, he spends time with his wife, his grandchildren or his 3 Golden Retrievers. He also still enjoys watching the Philadelphia Phillies and Flyers winning!

Krista recently graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Portland, School of Nursing. Krista feels extremely blessed to have the opportunity to join Dr. Thomas’ team. “Everyone is incredibly supportive and nice and I feel like they genuinely care about me as a person.”

Krista also feels that her job in urgent care meets the best of both worlds: “I loved being in the ER in nursing school and I love working with children!” Now that Krista is finished with nursing school, she looks forward to doing "anything besides studying!" She loves reading, cooking, hiking and backpacking, and traveling abroad when she can. Krista was recently married on the beach in Maui with nearly 20 of her closest friends and family members. She and her husband, Chris, are parents to six feline children: Matisse, Camille, Clea, Callie, Chloe, and Phoebe.
